“And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.’ – Luke 2:25-26
Not a designation we hear often referring to the Lord Jesus, but that is what Luke said, Simeon was waiting for the Consolation of Israel – the Lord’s Christ. For generations the prophets spoke of the coming Messiah and those prophecies were passed down from father to son, from mother to daughter, from family to family. Hope was building throughout the centuries, by the time of the first century, expectation was great that God was about to do something. Unfortunately the Jews were looking for a political leader who would restore Israel to its rightful place in the world because of the Roman oppression they suffered.

Centuries of waiting culminated in that moment for Simeon as he held the Christ Child in his arms. Christ came to restore the kingdom of heaven in the hearts of men. Little did they know He was indeed their consolation; the comfort and restoration they sought, their hopes and fears were met in Him.

Jesus is not only the consolation of Israel but God’s consolation to you. Have you been waiting for the fulfilment of a promise given long ago? Remember God keeps His word and it will come to pass just as it did for Israel.
