Floods? What Floods?

Psalm 93:3-4

3. The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

4. The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

We have all seen the power of waves when stirred up by the winds of a hurricane; they bring destruction and even death to all that is in their path. Their roaring noise brings fear and intimidation. What floods have lifted up their thundering in you life? What situation seeks to overwhelm or threatens to drown you? What waves are trying to swallow you up? The word waves in the Hebrew means a billow, or a breaker. A breaker is a tidal wave; therefore waves represent circumstances that would threaten to crush you. “The floods have lifted up their voice”, these waves that come in your life have a voice with which they speak. They say, “You cannot get out from under this, I will overwhelm you. I will destabilize you; you will not be able to stand. I will wash away and destroy all that you have stood for, I will dash to pieces your hopes and dreams, all that you have worked for, trained for, prayed for…”

Sounds extremely intimidating and frightening doesn’t it, but the Word of God says, ‘When the enemy comes in, like a flood the Lord will lift up a standard against him’ (Isa 52:19). The Lord will come like a flood lifting up a standard against the enemy of your soul. Verse 4 of Psalm 93 says, “The Lord (Yahweh) on high is mightier”. Two things to note, The Lord, He is already in an exalted place; Lord is high, far above all floods (and principalities and powers). That is where we are also because we are seated with Him in heavenly places. Then, He, Yahweh, is mightier, more powerful, than the noise of the enemy, than the floods that threaten to undo you. They may appear to you to be mighty but when you turn your eyes and look at Him you would see that He is mightier.

The “floods” that lift up their voice against you, it is only a noise they make (vs.4). But when Yahweh speaks the power of His voice causes the earth to melt (Ps 46:6). The voice of the Lord is over the waters” (Ps. 29:3). His voice takes pre-eminence over the babbling, the threats, the intimidation, over anything the enemy, your situation, the people around you may say. Are you listening to what He is saying or listening to what your situation is saying?

Let the floods and waves lift up their voices but when the Most High God, Your Father, Your Defender, Your Protector, Your shield, speaks all the earth is silent in His presence. Today He speaks to your floods and waves and commands them, “Peace be still” to “Shut up!” For the God of glory thunders.
